UKZN suspends academic programme on all campuses
Pending a meeting with student leadership, the University of KwaZulu-Natal has suspended the academic programme in all their campuses indefinitely.
THE University of KwaZulu-Natal has suspended the academic programme until further notice.
Classes were supposed to resume on Monday, 10 February, following two weeks of student protests.
In a communique sent last night to staff and students, Dr Kathy Cleland, UKZN Acting Registrar, said there would be no academic activities at all campuses and colleges.

“Registration for both undergraduate and postgraduate students will, however, continue unabated, and I urge all students to conclude their registration as soon as possible,” said the communique.
Cleland said the university management will meet with the Student Representative Council on Tuesday to continue discussions.

The university has reached an impasse with students over its historical debt policy. The university requires all students to pay at least 15% of their historical debt before being cleared to register. The SRC has railed against this policy, calling for it to be scrapped.
Ashton Bodrick, UKZN’s Executive Director of Corporate Relations, said the university is R1.7 billion in debt and cannot afford to make any concessions.
