Greenwood Park SAPS seize cables from illegal connections

More than 10 illegal connections were found during a multi-disciplinary operation in Red Hill, Glen Anil and Avoca.

THE Greenwood Park SAPS has warned the community of the dangers of illegally connected electrical cables after more than 10 illegal connections were found during a multi-disciplinary operation in Red Hill, Glen Anil and Avoca on Thursday, 23 January at 10am.

Spokesperson for the Greenwood Park SAPS, Captain Jerome Slater said illegal electricity connections were disconnected and cables belonging to the electricity department were seized.

“Cable theft is an ongoing issue. There are a lot of illegal connections especially in informal settlements. The danger is not only to themselves, but also children. There have been instances where children have been electrocuted. Often those doing the connection are not aware of the power unit, causing malfunctions and fires,” he said.

The operation was conducted by the SAPS Social Crime Prevention members, the eThekwini Electricity department as well as the city’s Land Invasion Unit.

“Persons illegally occupying and erecting structures were removed. There were no incidents of retaliation and the operation was successful,” added Slater.
