Foster a love for reading with NPO

The Open a Book for A Child programme is about story sharing, creating a love of books, expanding the horizons of the children and supporting those who are at risk of not learning to read, which is crucial for long-term success in today's world.

A LOCAL non-profit organisation continues to support children who are at risk by investing in their literacy and reading abilities.

The Open a Book for A Child programme is about story sharing, creating a love of books, expanding the horizons of the children and supporting those who are at risk of not learning to read, which is crucial for long-term success in today’s world.

The NPO who helped refurbish a media centre at Waterloo Primary School and had an extensive literacy programme with the learners of the school is expanding their literacy support programme to Parkgate Primary School, just off the M41 motorway.

Speaking to Northglen News, reading centre manager, Maddy Loynes said they were looking for volunteers to help with their literacy programme.

“Volunteers give between one and three hours per week, on their chosen day, to read to a Grade 2 or Grade 3 child, and to make the reading centre a fun place to be. We urge residents to join our current team of volunteers to share an hour or more of their time in a week to become a Learning Partner to a child – to offer extra reading, writing and language support in the reading centre. No previous teaching experience is required,” she explained.

An information session will be held on Tuesday, 11 February and Wednesday, 12 February at Cabana Beach Resort, 10 Lagoon Drive, Umhlanga Rocks from 9am to 11am.

Contact Megan Viljoen on 082 458 8811 or email openabookforachild@gmail.com to book.
