PHOTOS: M4 likely to be closed for several weeks

Repairs to the Ruth First Highway would take a little more than four weeks to repairs, says Metro Police spokesperson.

THE M4 Ruth First Highway is likely to be closed for several weeks to repair a section of the southbound road which collapsed on Monday due to the heavy rains.

The road remains closed between uMhlanga and Sibaya.

While City officials have remained mum on the situation, eThekwini Metro spokesperson, Senior Superintendent, Parboo Sewpersad said he was told the repairs would take a little more than four weeks.

“I’ve spoken to officials within the Department of Transport who’ve indicated the repair work will take a little over four weeks. My advice to motorists is to use alternate routes such as the R102, N2 and M41. Cement blocks have been placed under the uMhlanga Bridge and we are in the process of chevron delineators on the warning cones,” he said.

The closure on the M4 has also affected the Umhlanga Cabanas which suffered structural damage to the back half of the resort.

Ward councillor for the area, Nicole Bollman, said the Department of Transport, the Roads Department and Coastal Engineering have been on site to inspect the damage.

“City officials have been working around the clock to clear the end of Lagoon Road which had layers of sand across the road’s surface. The sewer systems also had to be cleared as they were clogged with sand. At this stage I would estimate the repairs to take close to a month but we’ve had no official word from the City. The added concern is more rain is expected today (Tuesday) and later this week.

The South African Weather Services says severe thunderstorms are expected to continue over most parts of KwaZulu-Natal on Tuesday.

Metro Police say they will be adding chevron delineator as added warning for motorists using the freeway.
