Cyclists hands-on for charity at Amashova Classic

This year has seen an increase in the number of worthwhile charities.

EVERY year, the Spirit of Shova grows at the annual Tsogo Sun Amashova Durban Classic as charities continue to use South Africa’s oldest cycle race as a fundraising platform for a wide variety of worthy causes. This year has seen an increase in the number of worthwhile charities involved including a big-hearted multiple Sclerosis sufferer making it his personal mission to raise funds for one physically challenged girl in particular.

Oliver Sinclair suffers from multiple sclerosis, but this hasn’t stopped him from going all out in helping other physically disabled people. Since he joined the CHOC Cows in 2016, he raised significant amounts of money for physically challenged athletes from Zimbabwe. He has now turned his attention to 12-year-old Abigail Swales who suffers from Rhett Syndrome.

Unable to walk or speak, Abigail is a prisoner in her own body and Sinclair successfully sourced her a Tobii communication device through the Ryan Walker Foundation.

“He has now challenged four able-bodied athletes to compete with him on hand cycles in the upcoming Tsogo Sun Amashova’s 35km race to raise funds for a wheelchair and chairlift for Abigail,” said CHOC Cows’ Gordon Reid who will be doing the 65km race on a hand cycle for Abigail.

Race director Annie Batchelder said using GivenGain will streamline the donation process for all charities involved in the race while also allowing any generous member of the public to easily donate funds to the many worthy causes through this credible and trusted digital platform.

“It never ceases to amaze me every year the calibre of people who overcome such adversity to ride the race for a worthy cause – they are truly inspirational and the heart of this race. We wish Oliver and all the other participants who are riding for a cause the very best of luck, we’ll be cheering for you from the side lines.”
