Sewage spill leads to beach closure in uMhlanga

Swimmers and fishermen have been advised to avoid the water after the recent sewage spill.

THE uMhlanga UIP has issued a statement today to say that all uMhlanga beaches have been closed due to pollution, as a result of the sewage spill in the Blackburn Village area last week.

On  Monday, spokesperson for the eThekwini Municipality, Msawakhe Mayisela said residents should avoid the water.

“While awaiting for the water results from the samples sent to the lab, the community is advised to refrain from all activities relating to the polluted water,” he said.

The municipality confirmed that the sewage spill came from the River Pumpstation in the Blackburn area. Residents were shocked to find scores of dead fish lining the uMhlanga Lagoon last week.
