Rescuers search for missing man in Durban Harbour

Two occupants from the canoe were treated on the scene for minor injuries.

RESCUERS are still searching for a man who went missing after a canoe capsized near Wilson’s Wharf in the Durban port area today just before 12pm.

Spokesperson for Rescue Care Paramedics, Garrith Jamieson said they are currently on scene together with SAPS, Metro police and the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI).

“Paramedics and rescuers are on the NSRI boat and have successfully rescued two occupants from the canoe who have sustained minor injuries. One person is confirmed missing and a search is underway around the damaged canoe for this occupant,” he said.

NSRI Spokesperson, Craig Lambinon said search and rescue efforts  are ongoing.

“Metro Police divers are assisted by NSRI rescue swimmers and NSRI rescue craft that are on the scene from NSRI Durban. This operation started early this afternoon,” he said.

Rescuers are working against the clock as high tide is expected to wash in at approximately 4pm this afternoon.
