Two eggs come out of their shells

Nurange farmer who supplied the eggs, Patrick Lagesse said this sort of thing might happen in larger eggs.

FINDING two yolks in an egg is fairly common, but finding a whole extra egg, complete with a shell, inside one’s boiled egg is unheard of. Yet this is just what Durban North resident, Wendy Hein found when she tucked into her breakfast last week.

“We bought the egg at the Golden Hours flea market in Durban North last Sunday,” said Hein

She said that while the extra shell came as a surprise, she still ate the egg as normal.

“We boiled the egg like any other egg and when we cracked it open we found an entire other egg inside. This is the second time we have had an egg like this in two months,” she added.

Janys Stewart who sold the egg to Hein said she has also noticed the same double shell in a few eggs.

“I live on an egg farm in Eston and sell eggs at the market. A while ago we had this gigantic egg which we took to show our customers. It weighed 140g, while a normal egg only weighs about 80g. While it was on display, someone bumped it over and when the egg cracked, we saw that there was another egg inside it,” she said.

Nurange farmer who supplied the eggs, Patrick Lagesse said: “Older birds tend to give us bigger eggs. We get double yolk eggs quite often, but a whole extra egg inside an egg is unusual. I buy day old chicks and rear them up to 16 weeks and then they go into my layer shed and start laying eggs. I have 20 000 birds in my layer shed. My eggs are fresh because I am a small farmer. As the eggs are laid, I start distributing them. We deliver eggs everyday so they are never more than two days old.”
