Sea Cow Lake water leak wreaks havoc for motorists

The city accused of delaying the fixing of a leaking pipe on a busy road just off Chris Hani Road.

A PROLONGED water leak at a major business on Sea Cow Lake Road, Umgeni Iron and Steel has become a hazard for pedestrians and motorists as murky water floods a section of road the busy road.

The managing director of the company that manufacturers iron and steel castings, Lee Bridges said they were not to blame for the leak but placed the blame squarely with the eThekwini Municipality. He said were dragging their feet in fixing a blocked and broken sewerage pipe on Sea Cow Lake Road just outside the driveway of the business.

“It was reported on 30 May and the report was followed up on 6 June and 13 June. The municipality reported that they sent a jetting machine to unblock the drain and the report is now closed. We have seen no jetting machine and the drain is still blocked. The leak only affects entry to the premises, we do however have a problem with sewerage backing up into our pipes. There is no leak to stop. The blockage has been partial for a few weeks, the extent of the blockage is getting worse,” said Bridges.

“The water has been leaking for over two months now and millions of litres of water has been wasted. The municipality has made no attempt to sort out the leak or the roads that is damaged,” he said.

A motorist who wanted to remain anonymous said the filthy water makes it impossible for to distinguish between the road and the potholes.
