Mothibi claims victory seconds ahead of Mthembu

As results pour in for the 2019 Comrades Marathon,  South Africans have filled three of the top five spots.

SOUTH African, Edward Mothibi was the first to cross the Comrades Marathon finish line with a time of 5:31:33. Hot on his heels, was last year’s winner, Bongmusa Mthembu who completed the marathon 25 seconds later in a time of 5:31:58.

Coming in third was Nao Kazami from Japan with a time of 05:39:16. Another South African, Mahlomola Sekhonyana crossed the line in fourth place with a time of 5:43:52. Justin Chesire from Kenya took fifth place in 5:09:21. Also representing South Africa was Gerda Steyn who made history when she was the first woman across the line, in a time of  5:58:53.

According to the Comrades Marathon website, 25000 entries were received before this year’s  cut off date on 2 May. In the up run this year, runners faced the ‘big five hills’: Cowies Hill, Fields Hill and Bothas Hill featured within the first 40 km of the race while Inchanga took runners to 50km and Polly Shorts was tackled with just over 10km left to go.
