First time voter uses social media to pick a party

Excited to vote for the first time, Akhil Ramlucken cast his vote in Durban North today.

FIRST time voter, Akhil Ramlucken (20) cast his vote at Chelsea Preparatory School in Durban North along with proud parents, Narisha and Vishnu Ramlucken.

Akhil said he took to social media and the internet to research which party he would choose at the ballot box.

“I am excited to vote today. It is important to vote if you want to make a difference. I hope my vote will make a difference,”  he said.

Father, Vishnu said he was glad to see his son make his mark.

“It is a good thing that he is voting, this is where we need to be. We encouraged him to come through to vote because he can make a difference. You can’t stand on the wayside and expect things to happen.  You’ve got to be part of the process. I heard that some 10 million South Africans didn’t even register- I don’t understand that,” he added.

For mother, Narisha, it is important for parents to let their children make their own informed decisions.

“We discussed the options as a family, but ultimately, who he votes for is his decision. With access to the internet and social media now days, there is enough information out there for youngsters to make their own decisions,” she said.

Another voter in the queue at Chelsea Preparatory School, Jennifer Hensey had also mostly used social media to stay informed about various political parties.

“I follow a few political parties on social media, to see what messages they post,” said Hensey.
