Collections started to help victims of Durban floods

Councillors across eThekwini are urging residents to support the victims of the floods with food, clothing and blankets.

UMHLANGA ward councillor, Heinz de Boer, has called on residents of North Durban to help support victims of the torrential rains that left 32 dead and hundreds homeless.

De Boer said the collection was for several areas across the province hardest hit by the Monday night’s heavy rains.

“A number of the councillors have gotten together and suggested we pool our resources and do a collection for non-perishable food items and blankets to help all the communities affected by the devastating floods. At this point these supplies are most needed to help the vulnerable communities affected.

“At this point one collection point for non-perishable food items only is at the La Lucia Mall Centre Management offices. They’ve been kind enough to lend us their support and for residents who have blankets and clothes to donate, I’m happy to collect those items from residents’ homes,” he said.

The heavy flooding across the City has left more than 22 people dead according to the eThekwini Municipality. More than 2 000 calls were logged through the City’s disaster management centre’s line.
