Rinaldo Road sinkhole worsened by flood

Heavy rain in various parts of the province has claimed at least 21 lives.

MOTORISTS are advised to be cautious when driving along Rinaldo Road where a sinkhole, that started with a water leak, has worsened with the recent floods.

Kyle Van Reenen of Marshall Security said the sinkhole had been there for a few days and gotten worse with the floods.

“We advise motorists to be cautious on the roads in the greater Durban area,” he added.

A Durban North resident, who wanted to remain anonymous said there had been several water pipe leaks over the past two weeks.

“The leaks were reported a few times, but it looked as though nothing was done about it and then, on Wednesday last week, I used the road and hit that hole very hard, because you can’t  really see it much from a distance, you only see it suddenly when you hit it. I knew it was going to cause a serious sink hole,” said the resident.

“I went onto Facebook and posted a warning, but I saw that my post was deleted from a few groups and this really upset me. How else are people supposed to know to be careful when they drive there. On Friday, I called the Municipality again to report the issue and there was no answer,” they said.

In a Facebook post, the eThekwini Municipality reported heavy rain in various parts of the province had claimed at least 21 lives, while over 2000 emergency calls were logged last night and 32 patients were being treated in and around Durban.

“We are currently mounting a spirited response as part of efforts to alleviate the impact of these extreme weather conditions on communities and business and to bring the lives of the people affected back to normality,” said the Municipality.
