17 drunk drivers arrested in M4 Easter roadblocks

Durban North SAPS say they will continue to host roadblocks in the area to keep motorists safe.

A TOTAL of 17 drivers were arrested for drunken driving across two roadblocks on the M4 over the Easter weekend. The roadblocks involved Durban North SAPS, Metro Police and the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI).

Police also confirmed one motorist was arrested and charged for being in possession of cocaine, while five others were charged with offences ranging from unlicensed vehicles to driving without a license.

Captain Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the Durban North SAPS, said despite warnings by police, the trend of drunk driving persisted.

“We had two roadblocks on the M4 Ruth First Highway, the first on Thursday night and the second on a Saturday where 17 people were arrested and charged. We’ve sent out several warnings about the dangers of drunken driving but despite this drivers are still breaking the law. We’ve arrested more than 50 people for drunk driving since the beginning of this year and the trend continues,” he said.

Deokaran reiterated that being arrested for drunk driving was not a misdemeanour.

“We have a zero tolerance approach for drunken driving, so appeals for leniency because some people view this as a ‘lesser crime’ are ridiculous. We will continue to host roadblocks to try to ensure safety on our roads,” Deokaran said.
