The eThekwini municipality announced, in a Facebook post, that 12 Metro Police Officers have completed their training in operating armoured vehicles recently.

“These vehicles will be used to protect officers when they faced with violent protesters. The protests have cost us millions of Rands when municipal vehicles are damaged,” read the post.

“There were 300 people protesting, singing and trying to intimidate the police,” he added.

Sewpersad said that the armoured vehicles required specialised skills to operate.

“They are specialised vehicles, they are not like a truck or a bus to drive. The vehicle has a lot of blind sides and the driver has to be guided by their immediate passenger. Metro officers have gained a lot of knowledge learning to operating the vehicles. The vehicles will be used to keep metro members safe,” added Sewpersad.
