UKZN registrar threatens to shut down campuses and residences

Lectures have been suspended at both Westville and Edgewood campuses following student protests.

THE registrar at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) this morning announced that lectures would be suspended.

Simon Mokoena said the suspension comes into place with immediate effect at the institution’s Edgewood and Westville Campuses.

“Due to the violent  student protest, please be advised that the Executive Management (EMC)  has taken a decision to suspend the academic programme at Edgewood and Westville campuses with immediate effect until  further notice. Staff and students are advised to use their judgement in terms of ensuring their safety and security,” he said.

Mokoena said university management will consider shutting  down the campus including the residences if ‘the situation does not improve’.

He added that other operations of the university will continue as normal in the interim.
