A close shave to our hearts

Over 30 ponytails of hair were donated at one shopping mall alone.

JEAN Govender turned heads at the CANSA Shavathon on Saturday, 2 March when she shaved off all of her hair to donate it to the worthy cause. Govender was rocking her new hairstyle at the Gateway Theatre of Shopping amidst a spray of vivid styles that created awareness and raised funds.

“I’ve been planning to do this for the past week. My hair donation is about 26cm long,” said Govender.
Govender said that she had lost many loved ones to cancer and wanted to do what she could to help.
“It is a cause that is close to my heart. My dad, cousin, cousin’s son and friend’s mom are all late. They all had different types of cancer. I would encourage everyone to help. We are so fortunate that we have our good health,” added Govender.

Gateway’s marketing manager, Michelle Shelley was out to show her support.

“We host the Shavathon every year. My mother in law was just diagnosed with cancer so this year is particularly important to me. A lot of people come and support because of what their friends and family have been through. A sister will come and shave her hair for her sister. It’s quite emotional, you’ll see tears streaming down their faces. My husband is a cancer survivor and has been in remission for 12 years. It is such a great cause to support CANSA,” she said.

Sagri Mudly of CANSA said that the amount of money raised was still being calculated.
“We haven’t done the final totals yet, but it was a resounding success. We had a lot of support from patrons of the the mall and the Umhlanaga community. We had over 30 pony tail donations at Gateway alone,” she said.
