Demi brings home gold from champs

Demi Botha was one of three South African athletes competing at the African Championships of Aerobics Gymnastics in Congo Brazzaville.

LOCAL resident, Demi Botha recently returned from Congo Brazzaville where she won a gold medal at the African Championships of Aerobic Gymnastics.

The 23-year-old was one of three South African gymnasts competing at the event. The competition was sanctioned by the Union Africaine De Gymnastique (UAG).

Incredibly Botha managed to win gold with very little practice before the champs due to a wrist injury.

“I had been struggling with a wrist injury this year and I was out for two months without being able to train properly, I even had a wrist brace on. When it came to leaving for the champs I wasn’t where I felt I needed to be and hadn’t completed the routine before the champs, in terms of practice. I had my first full routine in the Congo in training so to win for me was very special. I was so ecstatic with the gold medal and incredibly proud of my efforts considering the challenges I faced,” she said.

Botha, who is coached by her mother said having her mom at the champs was an added bonus.

“My mom is my coach but she was also the head coach of the South African team. I’ll admit we don’t always see eye-to-eye but having her at the champs was a huge positive for me. She has been my rock and support and I wouldn’t have been able to do this without her,” she said.

The other two athletes who made up the South African senior team, Wilson Mafona and Micayla Frost, also performed admirably finishing second and fourth respectively.
