Durban North community show Christmas spirit

A Rinaldo Road resident has praised the north Durban community for their support an upcoming Christmas party at Bright Eyes Centre for Visually Impaired Children.

WHEN Glenhills resident, Cathryn Aylett, put out a post on the Durban North Neighbours Facebook page on where to find or purchase a Christmas tree, she had no idea the impact it would have on the children she works with.

Aylett who works with the Bright Eyes Centre for Visually Impaired Children is actively involved in fundraising for the non profit organization.

The Rinaldo Road resident said the response from the north Durban community has brought home the true spirit of Christmas to her.

“My husband is away in Dubai and I wanted to surprise him with a Christmas tree so I put up a post on the Facebook page asking if anyone knew where I could purchase a Christmas tree. A lady by the name of Beth Talbot on the Durban North Neighbours page inboxed me saying she had a tree and I could have it if I could pick it up. I offered to pay and she said don’t worry about that. I drove to her house and collected the most magnificent Christmas tree with a box of decorations which was so much more than I expected,” Aylett explained.

“Just a few hours later I had a flood of people who said I have decorations and a woman actually came to my house and dropped off a bags of decorations. I just sat there that night thinking I have so much and I thought let me put it towards a Christmas party for the children at Bright Eyes. I put up a second post asking if anyone would be willing to help the school for a Christmas party and within 45 minutes, I had an entire party planned. From gifts to ice cream to Santa arriving in a response car, around 30 people responded pledging their support. The generosity of those who responded was incredible and not a single person asked for recognition,” she said.

Aylett said the response from the community showed her the true spirit of Christmas.

“One lady even went on to Amazon and researched toys specifically for visually impaired children and will be dropping them off soon. I don’t have the words to thank the community for their response. I’m incredibly humbled and it is just so amazing to know there are so many amazing people in the neighbourhood who care. For me this absolutely embodies the spirit of Christmas, it’s about giving it back. This is going to be a Christmas party of note for the learners and the residents don’t realise the impact they are going to have on the children,” she said.
