Two suspects shot dead following Durban North robbery

The suspects had minutes before the fatal shootout tried to hijack a resident in the area.

TWO suspects believed to have been involved in a botched house robbery in Durban North have been shot dead. The suspects were part of a gang of four who had broken into a Lansdowne Crescent home on Tuesday afternoon.

The suspects, who were using a white Mercedes Benz, in the robbery had minutes earlier tried to hijack and rob a resident in Savell Avenue, however the resident was able to getaway.

Marshall Security officers then responded to a house robbery in progress in Lansdowne Crescent with a vehicle matching the description of the one use in the attempted hijacking.

“A suspect armed with an AK47 rifle opened fire on our vehicle as we approached the home. Three other suspects then exited the home, two of whom were armed with a handgun and rifle respectively,” explained Marshall Security’s Kyle van Reenen.

Around 50 rounds were fired in the exchange and one of the suspects was shot and killed in the exchange.

“The gang then fled in the direction of Redhill Cemetery. When we arrived on scene we found one of the suspects in the back of the getaway vehicle had succumbed to fatal gunshot wounds. Several items from the home were recovered in the vehicle,” he said.

The two remaining suspects are still at large.

Capt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the Durban North SAPS confirmed two suspects had been shot dead but could not provide further details on the incident.
