Confusion over closure of Northway Post Office

The branch was closed two weeks ago, and residents are furious that no notice of its closure was provided.

LOCAL residents have expressed concern regarding the shutting down of Northway Post Office. The branch was closed two weeks ago, and residents are furious that no notice of its closure was provided.
Joan Chalmers, who has been using the branch for 45 years said she was shocked when she found out.

“I have had a post box at the branch since 1973. I just had a renewal notice payment made two weeks ago. This just came completely out of the blue – no notification. They should have at least contacted us,” said a disgruntled Chalmers.

According to a notice outside the branch which was officially shut down on Friday, 9 November, its closure is permanent. However, according to SAPO’s provincial spokesperson, Nobuhle Njapha the closure is temporary.

“The Northway Post Office is temporarily closed, and customers are welcome to collect their mail from the Durban North Post Office at 60 Kensington Road, Durban North,” read an email from Njapha.

Chalmers went on to add, “I was going to collect my mail when I found staff emptying all the boxes. I was told they are moving to Durban North. If I hadn’t come to pick up my mail, I would not have known.”

Attempts to get clarity on whether the closure was permanent or temporary were unsuccessful.

However, Njapha apologised to customers saying, “We apologise for the inconvenience and will inform you immediately when the branch reopens.”
