Stagger Trail to enhance Sani

The trail will take place on the same day as the full subscribed Sani Stagger Marathon and half marathon, covering distances of 38km and 21km

THE addition of the Stagger Trail event to Sani Stagger’s offerings is a move that didn’t need too much thought from the organisers, with justification coming as trail enthusiasts and road runners alike snap up entries for the trail runs on Saturday, 24 November.

The trail will take place on the same day as the full subscribed Sani Stagger Marathon and half marathon, covering distances of 38km and 21km, and Running Man Adventures’ Spurgeon Flemington felt that they needed to give runners more opportunity to get involved in the Sani Stagger weekend.

“With the marathon and half marathon being oversubscribed we wanted to give people that want to take part an option,” Flemington said.

“Adding the Stagger Trail was the perfect opportunity for us to broaden the Stagger weekend. We have seen how successful the Two Oceans Trail has become; and with the cross over between road running and trail running becoming so fluid we thought that we would give people the option of a trail run.”

The addition of the two trail runs was not added entirely without thought, Flemington and his team believe that the two events will add tremendous value to an already choker-block weekend of running.

“We have never really had routes of these sorts of distances in the past but it is still a great fit with runners being able to experience some exceptional trails. The trails run through the Maloti Drakensberg World Heritage Site and start and finish at the Premier Resort Sani Pass. We usually have point to point routes so a loop will be a little different to what we are used to. We will have to do a bit of maintenance on the routes because of the time of the year the event is taking place during, but with such a positive take up on entries it is worth it,” Flemington added.
