uMhlanga couple cycle for cancer awareness

Mandy Kidson and her partner Greg Willmore are cycling in the 65 kilometre event in aid of CHOC and in memory of their friend, Jodi Wersig, who died of cancer this year.

DISTINCTIVE in their black and white pattered bovine kit, The Cows are ready to raise as much as they can for the Childhood Cancer Foundation of South Africa (CHOC). The Cows have become a distinctive feature of the Tsogo Sun Amashova Cycle Classic and this year is no different for two uMhlanga residents, Mandy Kidson and Greg Willmore who are cycling in the 65 kilometre event in aid of CHOC and in memory of their friend, Jodi Wersig, who lost her battle to cancer earlier this year.

Kidson said Wersig’s husband, Dan suggested cycling this year’s Amashova over coffee.

“Jodi was one of my really good friends and she only recently passed away. Dan came up with the idea while we were having coffee and without thinking about it I said both Greg and I are in. I’m not a cyclist and I’ve only done a little bit of mountain biking a few years ago so this is going to prove a challenge for me,” Kidson explained.

“While discussing doing the Shova, Jodi’s husband said he watched his wife battle through cancer for 17 months and she was on medical aid. He just said knowing the pain she went through and being on medical aid and then considering what a child with no medical aid goes through motivated him to get behind CHOC’s message. We’ve now got a team together and we’ve also set-up a Given Gain page to raise as much as we can for the foundation,” she said.

Kidson said she has all the motivation she needs to complete the race.

“Though I haven’t cycled in a while having Jodi in my thoughts will be added motivation for me to get through. Our team will be wearing the cow suits so that in itself is also a challenge but we are confident ahead of the event,” she said.

She also thanked the community for supporting her cause. “Since setting up the GivenGain page and a Facebook page, the support from the community and my clients has been phenomenal,” she said.
