Tamryn aims for the top Down Under

The Grade 10 learner at Our Lady of Fatima Dominican Convent School will be competing at this year's Lifesaving World Championships (LWC) in Adelaide (Australia)

WHAT sets Somerset Park resident Tamryn McKie apart from other competitors, aside from her determination, is her belief that she can achieve her goals no matter what. The 16-year-old is one of a number of North Durban lifesavers representing South Africa at this year’s Lifesaving World Championships (LWC) in Adelaide (Australia).

The Grade 10 learner at Our Lady of Fatima Dominican Convent School has already set herself some lofty goals ahead of the global event.

“Making the South African junior team has always been my dream. I’ve been working really hard this year leading up to the SA Lifesaving Champs where they selected the national team. I won the Vixtrix Ludorum in the U17 category which was an amazing feeling. I’m hoping to compete in the ski and ironwoman events.

“My goal is to place first in ski and finish in the top three of the ironwoman event. My goals are quite extreme but I know I can achieve them if I put my head down and focus,” she explained.

McKie who has some international competition experience, was selected for the SA team at last year’s International Surf Rescue Challenge (ISRC) in New Zealand. However, she acknowledges the challenge at the world champs will be completely different.

“The world champs features the world’s best athletes so I’m under no illusions when it comes to the toughness of the competition. I’m happy to have so many teammates who I know will be behind me and the rest of the team which gives me added motivation. We are quite a close-knit team and I think that bond will serve us well heading Down Under,” she said.

McKie who is a Marine Surf Lifesaving Club member, said her coach, Russell Sadler has helped her immensely in the lead-up to the champs.

“Mentally and physically I feel ready and Russell has been incredible in that respect. A big thanks goes to him for where I am today,” she said.
