Woman loses handbag in uMhlanga smash-and-grab
The suspect, who escaped on foot, was seen fleeing into the bushes along the M41.
DURBAN North SAPS has warned motorists using the M41 off-ramp towards Umhlanga Rocks Drive to be extra vigilant following a smash-and-grab incident on Saturday night. According to Capt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the station, the incident occurred at about 8pm.
The driver took the M41 off-ramp, going towards Gateway recently when she was surprised by the suspect who was lying in wait.
“The woman’s handbag was allegedly on the seat and she states she saw a man with what appeared to be a spark plug as he broke the passenger window. The man grabbed her Polo bag, which had cash, her cell phone and other items to the value of R20 000. The suspect fled on foot towards the buses along the M41 before disappearing,” he said.

While there has been a reduction in smash-and-grabs this year, there has been more than 14 cases Northglen News has reported on this particular stretch of road alone in the last three years.
Deokaran urged residents to keep their valuables out of sight when parked or at traffic lights.
“Hide your valuables. Car floors, dashboards and seats are not good places to leave items,” he said.
