Greenwood Park detective secures successful convictions

The station commander commends the detectives for sterling work.

THREE men arrested in connection with armed robbery, attempted murder and possession of firearm and ammunition were given lengthy sentences at the Durban Regional Court last week. Mlenze Patrick Khuzwayo (29) and Nkosikhona Emmanuel Mhlongo (28) were sentenced to 12 years and 15 years imprisonment respectively.

According to Sergeant Vincent Mthembu, spokesman for the Greenwood Park SAPS, the case traces back to July last year.

“The victim had parked his car on Roadhouse Crescent and got out the car to urinate. While he was relieving himself he was hit with a hammer on his left shoulder. He turned around and saw three suspects who wrestled with him and they forcibly took his firearm from him which was in a holster. One of the suspects who hit him with the hammer, grabbed his firearm and started shooting at him.

“The suspect fired three times missing the victim and the suspects fled the scene. Crime prevention members from the Greenwood Park station responded quickly and managed to chase and arrest two of the suspects. They appeared in court several times until their sentence last week,” he said.

Mthembu commended the detective in charge of the case, Det Justice Makhanya for his hard work in securing the convictions.

“The station commander commends the detective for his sterling work in this case. These men were serious hardened criminals and we are happy that justice has run its course,” he said.
