Three arrested for false hijacking

The victims alleged they were hijacked and driven to eMdloti where a crash occurred.

THREE suspects are behind bars after they allegedly opened a false hijacking case at Tongaat police station. The men alleged they were hijacked on the Watson Highway by a hitchhiker. The alleged hijacker then pointed a weapon at the driver and instructed him to drive to eMdloti.

“While in eMdloti the hijacked vehicle crashed into another vehicle and into a barrier. The alleged hijacker fled the scene and according to the driver, nothing was taken. Police obtained a sworn statements from all three occupants of the VW Polo who stated they were hijacked,” explained Lieutenant Colonel Thulani Zwane.

Following an investigation it was established that all three were lying and had opened a false case of hijacking. All three suspects were arrested and charged with defeating the ends of justice.

“This is once again an indication that our police officers will not condone the misuse of police resources through the opening of false cases,” he said.

The arrested suspects aged between 18 and 22 years are due to appear in the Verulam Magistrate’s Court this morning facing charges of defeating the ends of justice.
