BEWARE: Not all of KZN’s beaches are open

Umhlanga Rocks Beach is one of more than 12 beaches that have been opened following a strike by KZN Sharks Board workers.

A FEW KwaZulu-Natal beaches remain closed as wage negotiations between the KZN Sharks Board and its employees continue. Last week all KZN beaches were closed after workers downed tools embarking on a strike over wage increases.

In a statement the Sharks Board said, “We are pleased to announce that shark safety gear has been reinstalled and bathing reopened at some of the beaches.”

On Friday, 27 July the workers took to the streets of uMhlanga vowing to shut operations at the Maritime Centre, demanding a 13 per cent wage increase, and R1000 for danger allowance, while the employer offered nothing.

Speaking to the Northglen News, the workers’ chief negotiator Mxolisi Cekwayo said: “We have suspended the strike as the employer is finally cooperating and willing to reach common ground.”

The Sharks Board went on to say,”The Board will continue to deploy gear at the remaining beaches tomorrow. It should be noted however that intense sardine and associated predator activity is still being experienced on the upper south coast between Illovu and Scottburgh. The Board will continue to monitor this activity and only replace gear at beaches within this region once the activity subsides.”
