Man robbed of R15 000 in uMhlanga

Two men armed with handguns robbed the victim of a large sum of money on Spring Grove.

A MAN was robbed of R15 000 in cash on Spring Grove in uMhlanga on Monday afternoon. The incident has prompted the Durban North/uMhlanga CPF to urge businesses and individuals to consider electronic banking, where possible.

According to police reports, the victim was carrying the money to a bank in the area to deposit it. On his way to the bank he was accosted by two armed men who held him up at gunpoint. The suspects then took the money and jumped into a white BMW getaway vehicle reportedly not fitted with number plates.

Chairman of the CPF, Haden Searles, said there had been a number of incidents like this in the past.

“These gangs have very good intelligence networks. So often the victim is robbed either on his way to the bank or on his way back to the car. It is highly advisable to consider electronic deposits where possible and not to take a chance. I would even urge businesses to enlist the help of a security escort to the bank. Also consider changing your patterns and be vigilant. These gangs are looking for soft targets and a quick getaway,” he said.

A case of armed robbery has been opened at the Durban North SAPS.
