Durban North police warn of spike in car thefts
According to Capt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the Durban North SAPS, police have recorded five or six thefts on average per weekend.
DURBAN North SAPS are urging residents and visitors in the area to ensure their vehicles are securely parked and locked following a spate of theft of cars in the area.
According to Capt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the Durban North SAPS, police have recorded five or six thefts on average per weekend.
“It is deeply concerning for us as the syndicate/s at work are targeting vehicles all over the area. It’s not limited to one specific area. Last month we arrested suspects who had stolen vehicles in the area so we suspect this new gang operating is the work of a different syndicate.
“They are targeting high-end cars. We are urging residents to ensure their vehicles are properly locked as often times the gang remote jams a vehicle,” he said.

“There has been a mixture of remote jamming cases as well as criminals breaking windows to gain access to the vehicle or suspects damaging the lock,” he said.
Deokaran also warned of a spike in theft out of motor vehicles in the area.
“This type of crime is preventable. Many residents visiting the beach, malls or those parking their cars on streets overnight should not leave items visible in their cars. Items such as laptops, cameras, and phones are what the suspects most often look for. I urge residents to double-check they have locked their cars and not to leave valuables in their cars,” he said.
