Libraries Summit to kick off in Durban

The summit will gather educators, practitioners and policy makers, as well as organisations and professionals working in partnership with African public libraries.

IN partnership with the African Library and Information Associations and Institutions (AfLIA), the department of Arts and Culture will on Tuesday, 3 July officially open the third African Public Libraries Summit. The summit will be opened by Arts and Culture minister Nathi Mthethwa at the Durban ICC.

“The National Department of Arts and Culture through the National Library of South Africa (NLSA) and Library and Information Association of South Africa (LIASA) will host the third African Public Libraries Summit under the theme, Driving Development: African Public Libraries Delivering on the Development Agenda,” the department said in a statement.

The department added: “The summit will gather educators, practitioners and policy makers, as well as organisations and professionals working in partnership with African public libraries to deliberate on key resolutions as guiding efforts towards the development and promotion of local content in African libraries.”

The summit will conclude on Wednesday, 4 July.

By the end of the summit, participants will be able to expand their skills in influencing policy and perceptions positively for public libraries at different levels through advocacy.
