WATCH: Sewage leaks onto uMhlanga promenade

The sewage is leaking onto the promenade just before the famed Lighthouse.

HUNDREDS of litres of sewage has seeped onto the uMhlanga promenade and beach following yet another burst pipe in the area.

It is believed a blocked pipe – located just before Ocean Way – lead to a burst in the sewerage further down.

Ward councillor Heinz de Boer expressed outrage over the ongoing issue, saying blocked and burst pipes have been an issue for the last two to three months.

“This is a top tourist beach, and we have thousands of joggers that use the promenade every day. This is disgusting and a major health risk – with ecoli and cholera and other bacteria. Is this how we welcome locals and tourists?” he asked.

According to DeWet Geldenhuys of the uMhlanga UIP the issue was reported on Tuesday. He said municipal workers responded on Tuesday night .

“They were back here first thing this morning to resolve the issue,” he said.

The trick now, he said, was to clear the blockage and then to send in a camera to determine where the burst is so that they can start the repairs.

Workers at the site told the Northglen News they believed food fat and sand had cause the blockage.
