LISTEN-Activists call for end of Dolphinarium shows

The 'Empty the Tanks' demonstration was part of a global movement, which saw similar demonstrations in 23 different countries all over the world.

ACTIVISTS in Durban have called on aquariums to phase out animal shows as part of a global effort to end cetacean captivity. On Saturday, several activists from Ban Animal Trading, an animal rights NPO, hosted a demonstration called ‘Empty the Tanks’ on the Durban Promenade last weekend.

The demonstration was part of a global movement, which saw similar movements across 70 locations in 23 different countries all over the world.

Speaking to Northglen News, local resident, Prathna Singh, said the aim of the demonstration was to make the public aware of the cruelty involved in dolphin captivity.

“In a tank, dolphins are confined to spaces far too small for them to travel the distances they would in the wild. They are forced to perform tricks for human entertainment so that they may be fed dead fish, denying them the use of their natural hunting instincts. We should not be resigning innocent animals to a lifelong prison sentence for a brief period of mindless human entertainment.

According to the NPO, dolphins echolocation and sensitive hearing make the applause, music and cheering at dolphinariums a nightmare. They are unable to get away from each other when conflict arises as they are trapped in small spaces together.
