Three arrested in Gateway after foot chase

The suspects were found in possession of several laptops, believed to have been stolen.

THREE men attempting to break-in to a vehicle were arrested by members of the Durban North SAPS and Excellerate Services Security (Enforce) after a short foot chase through Gateway mall on Tuesday night at about 9.30pm.

According to Durban North SAPS spokesman, Capt Raymond Deokaran, the suspects were found in possession of several car breaking implements and had attempted to break-in to a parked vehicle.

“The suspects were spotted by an undercover security officer in the parking lot. The suspects were acting suspicious and the officer approached the men as they attempted to break into a vehicle. A short foot case occurred through the mall and the suspects were apprehended and handed over to Durban North police.

“We searched the vehicle used by the suspects and found several car breaking implements as well as several laptops believed to be stolen. The men were charged with theft out of a motor vehicle. Our investigations are continuing to see if the men are linked to other incidents in and around the area,” he said.

Although police could not confirm, it is believed the suspects had outstanding warrants of arrest for similar offences.

Anton Diedericks, general manager of Excellerate, said the vehicle used by the suspects was a white Opel.

“The vehicle was fitted with false number plates and was found to be a rented vehicle. We also found a wallet with a man’s personal details and contacted him, he only realised his car had been broken into in another mall in the area. I must commend the undercover officer as well as the Durban North police for their help with the successful arrest,” he said.
