Team effort nets local duo top Tweni surf spot

The event was well attended, produced exciting surfing and raised much-needed funds, which will go towards senior surfers who will be representing Ugu Surfriders at the South African Championships.

THE duo of Beyrick de Vries (uMhlanga) and Chad du Toit, walked away with R20 000 after winning the Tweni Twos held at Umtentweni recently. The team dubbed, ‘No Diggity’ competed in the competition which saw two-man teams go head-to-head with each surfer’s two highest scores making up a team total.

The event was well attended, produced exciting surfing and raised much-needed funds, which will go towards senior surfers who will be representing Ugu Surfriders at the South African Championships.

Tide-Lee Ireland and Karl Steen placed first and second in the U18 boys division, which not only netted them R3 000 and R1 000 respectively, but also earned them entry into Saturday’s main showdown.

Jesse Powell won the Under-18 girls division and pocketed R3 000 in a tightly contested final, plus an extra R1 000 for the Wave of the Day.

The ‘Fortnigters’, the wildcard team of Ireland and Steen, made the most of their hard-earned opportunity and won R5 000 for placing second.

Aside from making up one half of the champion team, De Vries also claimed the Wave of the Day and Most Rail to Rail Surfing awards, adding R5 000 to his winnings.
