Police warn of smash-and-grabs on Umhlanga Rocks Drive

Police have increased their patrols at the intersection but warn motorists to be vigilant.

A LOCAL resident fell victim to a smash-and-grab incident on Umhlanga Rocks Drive at the M41 off-ramp intersection on Sunday afternoon. The incident occurred at about 3pm. While there has not been a spike in incidents, police have warned motorists to be especially vigilant at the intersection.

According to Capt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the Durban North SAPS two cases have been reported since last Friday. According to Deokaran, in the case, suspects had been targeting the N2/M41 interchange which was under construction, providing easy access and a handy getaway for the thieves.

“In this incident, the suspect used an object, which may have been a spark plug, shattering the passenger window of the vehicle and stealing a cellphone from the woman’s handbag. Both incidents have occurred at different times so the criminal is using opportunistic tactics. We have upped our patrols at the intersection however motorists are still urged to be vigilant,” he said.

“We are again appealing to motorists not to leave goods lying on the seats of their cars and to be extremely vigilant when driving through the area. Car floors and seats are not good places to leave items,” he warned.
