Ron Clockie’s spirit lives on

Since the installation of the "Ron Clokie" tap in 1993, another tap has recently been installed outside the Glenore Centre.

HAVE you ever wondered what the rather nondescript looking tap outside the DSTV building along Umhlanga Rocks Drive is all about? Well – here’s the reason.

Jogging has become a lifestyle to many, however for long distance joggers life can get a bit difficult once they run out of water.

The tap was installed in 1993 to service the running and walking community at large.

This great initiative was started by the Regent Harriers running club, in memory of their founder Ron Clokie. The late Clokie formed Regent Harriers in 1960, primarily as a Comrades training group. Over the years the group has grown tremendously.

Member of the Regent Harriers’ Olivier Maujean says their success lies in the group’s ability to bring people from different walks of life together, united by their passion for running and walking.

“It has become such an incredible phenomenon. It is totally informal and caters for everyone, from the serious ultra-runner to the Dusi participant to the Iron Man hopeful or simply for anyone wanting to improve and maintain their fitness. You don’t have to worry about renewing licences or paying fees and you are free to come and go as you please,” said Maujean
