Hard work and dedication needed for growing bonsai trees

Although the word bonsai is Japanese ( meaning planted in a container), the art is believed to have originated in the Chinese empire.

“IT’S an artistic hobby, a very rewarding one,” said bonsai tree trainer Jacques Nel. Local resident and member of the Durban Bonsai Society was part of this year’s annual Bonsai Show held at the North Durban Lions Club in Durban North recently.

The show was aimed at teaching residents about the art of bonsai grooming and training. Experienced trainers like Nel were also showcasing their work.

Nel, who has a collection as old as the democratic South Africa said being part of the show was always great.
“The show is a great platform to showcase my work. It feels good when people admire and appreciate the effort I put in training my trees,” he said.

Nel said the show has gained popularity over the years, saying more people are now showing interest in this exquisite form of art.

“This year’s show was better than last years, however it could get better. In the two days we had a crowd of roughly 400 people come in through the gate,” said Nel.

The society has thanked all those who attended the show.

“The success of the show is because of fans who appreciate the artistry of bonsai. Thank you to all of our society’s members that assisted in putting this show together without your hard work and dedication this wouldn’t be possible. We hope to see you at our next club meeting,” said the society’s Martin Rai Naidoo.
