Residents rally around Sunningdale security guard

"I give all my gratitude to Anita, she's the one who did all of this,"said Zondi

ROBERT Zondi, a Sunningdale security guard says he will always be grateful to resident Anita Stander, for helping him secure a reliable mode of transport to and from work.

After years of walking from Quarry Heights to Sunningdale everyday, Zondi now has a bicycle, donated by Gregory Albert at Cycle Sphere.

Stander said she approached Zondi when she saw him limping and he told her that he walked daily to work. Stander then posted Zondi’s picture on Facebook, urging anyone who could assist to do so.

She said she was astounded by the quick response as she started getting offers within minutes.

“I was really taken aback by the empathy and kindness of people. A Sassa pensioner called Lynn wanted to offer R50. A schoolgirl called and offered R20. I received calls from business men asking me to take him to choose any bicycle he wanted and they would pay. A transport company offered to transport any bike from any city in SA for free when I told them he already had an offer of a bicycle. I had not set up a trust account and the bike had already been secured,” said Stander.

A grateful Zondi said he had never imagined anyone would do such a kind thing for him.

“I give all my gratitude to Anita, she’s the one who did all of this. Now I don’t have to walk and risk my health. Cycling is safer and keeps me fit without hurting my feet,” he said.
