VIDEO: Beloved pooch reunited with owner 3 years later

Chippy, the Jack Russel was found more than 580 kilometres away from home.

A JOHANNESBURG family was overcome with emotion this week when they were reunited with their lost dog, Chippy.

The Jack Russel terrier was found in Durban, more than 580 kilometres away from his home in Edenvale, and had up to this week, been missing for three years.

It was technology that helped facilitate the happy reunion as the Durban & Coast SPCA found that Chippy had been micro-chipped. Project Dog, a local NPO also facilitated the happy reunion by paying for Chippy’s boarding fees while he was at the SPCA.

Bronwyn Kuhlenthal said her stepdad, Graham Moore, who owned Chippy, was so pleased to see his best friend again.

“We’d lost all hope of ever seeing him again. On the night he went missing and the months following that, we searched everywhere for him. There were fireworks that night and he was so traumatised that he got out of our yard and we just couldn’t find him. It was surreal getting the call from the Durban & Coast SPCA in December saying they’d found Chippy.”

“I couldn’t believe it at first, then they said his microchip had been scanned and our details had come up. We had to pay for him to board for part of the month before we managed to bring him home. Seeing both my stepdad and Chippy’s reactions was priceless, it was like they hadn’t been apart,” she said.

Kuhlenthal said Chippy was in great condition and had obviously been well looked after.

“We still don’t know how he got to Durban and what happened when he got here, but he sure has one helluva tale to tell,” she said.

Tanya Fleischer of the SPCA said the reunion proved how invaluable microchipping was.

“This is the best way to ensure that you will be reunited with your pet should they go missing,” Fleischer said.
