Water collection points set up for CT

Gift of the Givers recently launched 'Operation Cape Town' in a bid to push back the water crisis facing the Mother City.

GIFT of the Givers is urging local residents to help drought-stricken Cape Town by sending thousands of litres of water as day zero – the day the taps will be shut off – fast approaches. The Mother City is the first major city in the developed world to run out of water. Various drop-off and collection points have also been set up in uMhlanga.

The foundation recently launched ‘Operation Cape Town’ in a bid to push back the water crisis.

“We have embarked on a drive to collect water for the drought stricken Western Cape. We encourage residents, mosques, churches, schools, companies and other institutes to donate sealed water bottles to the various collection points set-up,” said Imtiaz Sooliman, founder of Gift of the Givers.

Another resident doing her part to help is Mary Knox who will be hosting a water collection point at Eastmans SPAR on Saturday, 3 February.

“I will be setting up a table at the Eastmans Glenashley SPAR at 9.30am. I’m urging the north Durban community to donate 5 litre bottles of still water. This collection will then be transported to Cape Town by the Gift of the Givers to help assist people in the Cape. I am also appealing to shoppers who come into SPAR to include one or more 5 litre bottles of water with their shopping to donate on their way out,” she said.

A full list of collection points for the Gift of the Givers can be accessed via their website www.giftofthegivers.org.
