Online survey finds SA optimistic about 2018

The researchers found that South Africa was one of the most optimistic countries globally where 85 per cent of people expect good things from the new year.

AN online survey conducted by Ipsos in 28 different countries found that 76 percent of people think 2018 will be a better year than 2017.   The researchers found that South Africa was one of the most optimistic countries globally where 85 per cent of people expect good things from the new year.

They said the level of optimism varied significantly and countries with a younger population report higher levels of positivity than those with an aging one. Latin America is the world’s most optimistic region.

Due to the gulf in age between both regions’ populations Europe is the gloomiest. Peru and Colombia come first overall in the research with 93 per cent of people in both countries expecting 2018 to be better than 2017. China was also extremely positive with 88 percent of Chinese respondents expecting improvements this year. This they found was a similar level to India where the share is 87 percent.

Japan is rock bottom of the survey with only 44 percent expecting 2018 to surpass 2017, primarily due to a lack of optimism among the country’s aging population.
