According to paramedics, the woman suffered injuries to her back and lower limbs and was transported to hospital in a stable condition.

A CYCLIST was knocked on the M4 (Blue Lagoon) on-ramp today (11 January).  The female cyclist was in the cycling lane when the accident occurred. According to Shawn Herbst of Netcare 911, the accident occurred at about 7.30am.

“Reports from the scene indicate the cyclist, a 30-year-old woman was hit by a hatchback while cycling near the promenade. The woman suffered injuries to her back and lower limbs and was transported to hospital in a stable condition,” he said.

It is understood the cyclist is currently undergoing x-rays at a local hospital. Metro Police were also on scene to investigate the case further.

Aroon Patel, chairman of the eThekwini Cycle Safe Forum committee urged cyclists and motorists to be careful. The forum was launched in 2016 in the wake of the tragic deaths of Richard da Silva and Jared Dwyer, who were killed on the M4 while cycling.

“I’m appealing to motorists to be vigilant especially when it comes to the designated cycling areas to exercise caution. I’m also urging cyclists to be aware especially at any intersection, be it the M4 on and off-ramps or elsewhere. We are not pointing fingers at who is responsible here but rather trying to reach a common understanding between motorists and cyclists.  We can share the road. It’s not just for motorists or just for cyclists, but accommodating both,” he said.
