Fears of uMhlanga sinkhole widening

The Ridge Road resident who spoke to Northglen News said her daughter-in-law had also got stuck in the hole while trying to drive into her home.

SEVERAL uMhlanga residents have expressed their concerns regarding a sinkhole forming at the intersection of Michel Avenue and Ridge Road. Linda McGregor, whose driveway is affected by the sinkhole said there are two depressions on either side of the road that may widen with heavier downpours.

She said the issue has been ongoing from May when fibre optic cable laying companies began construction work.

“They hit the main water pipe and that caused a sinkhole on my side of the road which affected my driveway. Since then I’ve sent countless emails to the fibre company who were responsible, but there has been no comeback from them since May. Subsequently, a depression has formed on the other side of the road which is extremely dangerous. DeWet Geldenhuys and Paul de Swart from the CPF have tried to help me and they’ve placed a yellow bin in the sinkhole on my driveway to warn motorists,” McGregor said.

The Ridge Road resident said her daughter-in-law also got stuck in the hole while trying to drive into her home.

“We were told at the time the contractors were given the wrong specs by the City but still no one is taking responsibility for this. They’ve tried to patch around it but with the rains the patch has washed away. We just want the issue to be fixed,” she said.

Renate Voss, who also lives in the area, said the sinkholes would be an issue for motorists, who don’t know the area.

“Especially at night, there is very little warning for motorists. It’s unbelievable that something so dangerous could be left unattended for so long, it’s ridiculous,” she said.
