Shop like a pro on Black Friday

Buckle up for Black Friday with these handy tips.

FOR those willing to brave an elbow in the ribs or sacrifice their ankles to wayward trolleys and invest their time in winding queues Black Friday officially starts on 24 November and for those who err on the safe side, online sales start at 00:01am on the morning of the 24th.

The Northglen News has compiled a list of 6 tips to see you through the day:

Winners research: Do your research and Google, Google, Google! Research prices and compare them.

It’s all about the fine print: Check ‘Black Friday’ returns policies. Many stores have specific policies in place for items purchased on Black Friday. Legally some stores are under no obligation to accept returns or exchanges on products bought on Black Friday.

International shopping: It is tempting to buy abroad and in many instances the prices are cheaper until you click ‘checkout’. Advertised prices seldom include shipping costs or the customs and clearance fees levied upon arrival. Reading ‘Customs and Duties Vat’ on the SARS website to gauge the costs associated with international shipping.

Arrival of goods: Estimate time of arrival (ETA) is just that, an estimate and the ‘Silly Season’ causes major backlogs at customs which often results in your purchase only arriving in the new year.

Flashy spender: Don’t let your credit card statement catch you off guard at the end of the month. To discourage emotional spending, prevent a buyers’ remorse and a trolley full of unwanted good, compile a budget and wish list of the items you want and stick to it.

Safety first: Online shoppers beware of being re-routed to a fake sites. https// – the letter ‘ s’ indicates that the site you choose to purchase from is secure.  If you are going to brave the crowds at the stores get there early, wear comfortable shoes clothes, keep an eye on your wallet and be prepared to stand in long queues. Take a fold-up chair to maximise your comfort, buy beverages in store and stay dehydrated.

Local is lekker: Buying locally is not only kinder on your pocket but  stimulates the local economy. Don’t be duped – buying online locally doesn’t exempt you from additional costs and delays. Always check the shipping costs and the fine print. The ‘Silly Season’ backlog applies locally as well; make sure you check the ETA before completing your purchase.

Happy Shopping!
