Pre-school issues nurdle clean-up challenge

AN uMhlanga pre-school has challenged other schools across Durban to help tackle the clean-up of billions of nurdles which have been strewn across Durban’s coastline. Nurdles have dotted the shoreline since the storm on Tuesday, 10 October and while they aren’t harmful in themselves, the raw industrial material absorbs hazardous substances which in turn pose a threat to the environment.
Now, Little Einsteins, a pre-school based in uMhlanga said they would conduct regular clean-ups along uMhlanga beach where the nurdles have also been spotted. Liza van Rooyen of the school said she had organised a prize for the child that collects the most nurdles.

“When we heard about the disaster I wanted to get the children involved. They are the future wildlife warriors and through them they could encourage their parents to also get involved. Whenever we get an opportunity, we’ll go down and clean-up. It’s a great way for the children to realise how important the marine environment is.
“We are challenging other pre-schools in the area to go out and also help. Cabana Beach Hotel has sponsored a two night mid-week stay for six, for the child who collects the most nurdles. We would like other companies if they want to get on board to sponsor more prizes,” van Rooyen enthused.
