Gang breaks down door, robs Durban North home

Police suspect the suspects were the sledgehammer gang involved in two break-ins in La Lucia on Wednesday.

AN armed gang stormed a Durban North home just before lunchtime on Thursday. The break-in on Burleigh Crescent, was the fourth within 24 hours. The three other break-ins occurred on Vickers Place, William Campbell Drive and Wilson Way. Although police could not confirm, it is believed the suspects were the sledgehammer gang involved in two break-ins in La Lucia on Wednesday.

According to Marshall Security’s Kyle van Reenen, the gang were spotted fleeing the scene by the gardener.

“It’s unclear how many suspects were involved. They derailed the electronic gate before smashing down the door. Several household goods were taken in the break-in. We showed the gardener the vehicle used in yesterday’s break-ins but he was unable to positively identify it,” he said.

Police also responded to an attempted break-in in the early hours of Thursday morning in Cyrus Place (Park Hill).

According to van Reenen, the suspects gained access to the home through the bathroom window.

“The homeowner heard a sound and went to investigate, he was confronted by the suspects in the bathroom. While he was in a tussle with the men, he cut himself with a piece of broken glass. The suspects managed to escape and left the property empty handed,” he said.
