City warns of strong gale force winds approaching

Areas close to the coast are expected to experience strong winds says the SA Weather Service.

GALE force winds are expected between East London and Maputo on Thursday. According to the South African Weather Service, south-westerly winds of 70-80 km/h are expected.

Areas close to the coast are expected to experience high winds as shown by the tweet below.

On Wednesday, the Ministry of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) said disaster management teams will stay alert in all provinces as thunderstorms are expected to return to the country over the weekend.

Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal provinces were the worst affected by the recent storms and rain, which have left 14 people dead, families displaced and scores of injuries.

The eThekwini Municipality’s spokesperson, Tozi Mthethwa warned residents of two imminent cold fronts approaching Durban. “The cold fronts are expected to pass out to sea on the south of the province. Associated with these are strong winds which will travel at approximately 58 kilometres per hour. Heavy rainfall is also expected this afternoon,” she said.

In other storm news, marine operations at the Port of Durban have partially resumed following disruptions caused by inclement weather experienced this week.
