Death toll moves to 11 after Durban storm, may rise
The police have received more than 150 calls related to yesterday’s weather and they have been working tirelessly with other Disaster Management Services to assist the victims.
THE number of people who have died following the storms and flooding in Durban has reached 11. According to Lt Colonel Thulani Zwane, provincial SAPS spokesman, the fatalities have been reported in uMlazi, Isipingo, Durban Central and KwaMakhutha. Five people are still being sought since they have been reported missing from yesterday.
“The police have received more than 150 calls related to yesterday’s weather and they have been working tirelessly with other Disaster Management Services to assist the victims,” he said.
In other storm news, all vessel movements have been suspended in the Port of Durban due to inclement weather, says the Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA).
“The inclement weather is also expected to disrupt operations at the Port of Richards Bay. Transnet’s marine services team and tugboats are assisting with several emergencies,” the Transnet National Ports Authority.
These include the grounding of three vessels in the Port of Durban. Other vessels have broken mooring lines and are drifting in the channel.
“While we are still in the process of determining damage to port infrastructure, we are relieved that no injuries have been reported. Several TNPA premises have been flooded, including the Transnet Maritime School of Excellence in Bayhead Road,” the Transnet National Ports Authority said.
