Virginia student robbed by armed men

The driver's accomplices pretend to be passengers and then rob the unsuspecting passengers with a knife or a gun.

DURBAN North police have warned domestic workers, gardeners and taxi commuters in the Durban North area to be wary of a taxi driver and his three accomplices who are robbing people needing lifts in the area. In the latest incident, one of the robbers taunted his victim, giving her a watch and R25 ‘to remember him by’.

In the last week, three robberies have been reported all with the same modus operandi.

On Tuesday night, a student was robbed of her cell phone and laptop on Swapo Road (Broadway), confirmed Marshall Security’s Kyle van Reenen.

“The traumatised student said that she boarded the taxi on Radar Drive to get to her home in Virginia. There were three suspects in the taxi and one of the suspects produced a firearm and demanded her laptop, charger and her iPhone. He then gave her R25 cash to get back home and was dropped off on Broadway and put his watch on the victim’s wrist to remember him by,” he said.

This watch was placed on the victim's wrist.

According to van Reenen, attempts to track the phone were unsuccessful. The last signal showed the taxi moving on the N3 towards the CBD.

According to Durban North SAPS spokesman, Capt Raymond Deokaran, the suspects are using a white Quantum mini-bus. The driver’s accomplices pretend to be passengers and then rob the unsuspecting passengers at knife-point or gunpoint.

“On Friday last week, the victim got into a taxi on Umhlanga Rocks Drive, as he sat down, one of the passengers pulled out a knife and held it to his hip. Another victim in the taxi was also being robbed of her cell phone and money. They then dropped the victims off near Beachway. All the other incidents have followed the same modus operandi. At this stage we are warning residents and taxi commuters to remain vigilant,” Deokaran said.
